Terms 5 and 6

What will we be learning about this term?

English

In Term 5 we are going to be reading 'Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves' by Kelley Townley. In Term 6 we are going to be reading 'Aladdin and his Wonderful Lamp' by Kelley Townley. Both of these stories link to our History theme of Ancient Islamic Civilisations. These terms we are going to be writing: persuasive letters, recounts, exciting character and setting descriptions and fantasy stories. All of these will showcase the children's creativity and imagination!

History

Our topic question this term is 'What can the past teach us about different cultures?'

We will be exploring the ancient Islamic civilisation by trying to answer the following questions:

  1. How different was Baghdad to London around 900AD?
  2. What was the House of Wisdom?
  3. Who was Ibn Battuta and what was the impact of his discoveries?
  4. How significant were the discoveries of early Islamic scholars and what impact did they have on the wider world?
  5. What did early Islamic civilisation leave behind?

Geography

Our theme this term is map skills. The skills the children will be developing will include:

  • use maps, atlases, globes and digital/computer mapping to locate countries and describe features studied

  • use the eight points of a compass, four and six-figure grid references, symbols and key (including the use of Ordnance Survey maps) to build their knowledge of the United Kingdom and the wider world

  • use fieldwork to observe, measure, record and present the human and physical features in the local area using a range of methods, including sketch maps, plans and graphs, and digital technologies.

Everyone in Kingfisher has enjoyed their learning these terms. They have built on and consolidated previous learning as well as developing some new skills. Well done all of you!
