Terms 3 and 4

Topics

This term our topic is The Lunar Zodiac. We shall be starting some new and exciting topic projects this term in History, Geography, Science, Art and DT.

Knowledge organisers will be shared with parents at the beginning of the term to give further information about our topic projects.

History

The children will learn about the history of ancient China, focusing primarily on the Shang Dynasty, and explore the lasting legacy of the first five Chinese dynasties, some of which can still be seen in the world today.

Geography

Children will identify physical features in the United Kingdom and will learn about the National Rail and canal networks. They will conduct an enquiry to prove a hypothesis, gathering data from maps and surveys before drawing conclusions.

In terms 3 and 4, we will also be looking at capital cities around the world and will complete a study closer to home, identifying the settlement types in our local area.

Science

Forces and Mechanisms

During this project, children will be able to revise learning based around the forces of gravity, air resistance, water resistance and friction, with children exploring their effects. They will learn about mechanisms, their uses and how they allow a smaller effort to have a greater effect. This will be linked with their DT project, where they will make moveable models.

Earth and Space

Children will be able to revisit previous learning during this topic and also learn new elements, such as:

- making of sundials

- times of day around the world

- day length and seasons

- the phases of the moon

- lunar and solar eclipses

Art

This project teaches children about colour theory by studying the colour wheel and exploring mixing tints, shades and tones. They learn about significant landscape artworks and features of landscapes before using this knowledge to create landscape paintings.
