History - The Ancient Greeks
This term, our History curriculum focuses on the fascinating world of Ancient Greece, with a particular emphasis on the origins and development of democracy. Pupils will explore how democracy first emerged in the city-states of ancient Greece—especially Athens—and how it compares to modern democratic systems. They will learn about the structure of ancient Greek society, including the roles of men, women, children, and slaves, and how these roles influenced education and daily life. The curriculum also examines Greek religion, comparing the beliefs and gods of the time to other ancient and modern religions. Students will investigate the lives and legacies of significant historical figures such as Homer, Alexander the Great, and Leonidas, considering their impact both then and now. The origins and importance of the Olympic Games will also be studied, highlighting their lasting global influence. Finally, pupils will delve into the remarkable contributions of Greek mathematicians like Archimedes and Pythagoras, discovering how their ideas continue to shape our world today.
Geography - Mountains and Highlands in the UK
In Geography these terms, we will be delving into the UK's mountains and Highlands. The children will learn the features of mountain and mountain ranges and how different types of mountains are formed. We will then look specifically at the Highlands regions in Scotland and complete our own research based case study.
RE - What would Jesus do?
In these term, we will be examining different religious parables and stories that Jesus told and how this dictates how Christians believe they should live their lives. We will be analysing the Sermon on the Mount, the Parable of the Two Builders and Peter's Denial of Jesus.
Science - Classifying Living Things
This term we will be exploring the following learning objectives:
1. Recognise that living things can be grouped in a variety of ways
2. Explore and use classification keys to help group, identify and name a variety of living things in their local and wider environment
3. Recognise that environments can change and that this can sometimes pose dangers to living things.
We will be looking closely at the animal kingdom to identify invertebrates and vertebrates as well as exploring the world of plants and how best to classify them using dichotomous keys.
Design Technology - Nutrition and Designing Food Packaging
We will be delving into the world of product design, looking specifically at:
- Nutrition
- Various types of packaging; focus on materials like paper, plastic, and biodegradable options. Discussing how these choices impact sustainability.
- Discuss and categorise the functions of packaging, such as protection, containment, information, and marketing. Analyse examples of effective packaging from daily life.
- Analysis of food labels on existing products to learn about nutritional information, legal labelling requirements, and how these influence consumer behaviour.
- Design a food package for a fictional product, focusing on aesthetic and functional aspects. Include considerations for environmental impact and customer appeal.
- Peer-review created designs; focusing on how well designs meet specified needs including environmental sustainability, functionality, and consumer appeal.
Art
In Art this term we will be studying the 3D artist Yayoi Kusama.
Yayoi Kusama is a Japanese artist who is sometimes called ‘the princess of polka dots'. Although she makes lots of different types of art – paintings, sculptures, performances and installations – she has become known for the one thing they have in common, DOTS!
We will be having a go at recreating our own 3D art based on her botanical 3D sculptures.
