Term 1

History and Languages

Our topic this term is 'What did the Romans do for us?'. During this topic we will be looking closely at Roman Britain. In addition, we will be learning Latin which will link closely with our Roman work.

Roman Wow Day - Catapult making!

Our Maths focus this term is Number and Place Value. Children will have an opportunity to:

  • read, write, order and compare numbers to at least 1,000,000 and determine the value of each digit
  • count forwards or backwards in steps of powers of 10 for any given number up to 1,000,000
  • interpret negative numbers in context, count forwards and backwards with positive and negative whole numbers, including through 0
  • round any number up to 1,000,000 to the nearest 10, 100, 1,000, 10,000 and 100,000
  • solve number problems and practical problems that involve all of the above
  • read Roman numerals to 1,000 (M) and recognise years written in Roman numerals

For the first two weeks of the term, the whole school are studying the same text. The chosen text is a picture book called Journey by Aaron Becker.

So far this term, the children have explored the text by making inferences from the pictures - which has resulted in some fantastic whole class discussions!

At the moment, the children are working hard to retell a part of the story in their own words. We will share some of these with you when they are finished!

In the third week, we will begin to study our first class text. This term it will be The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. Throughout terms 1 and 2, the children will be writing in a range of different text types, including; diary entries, newspaper reports, non-chronological reports and story writing.
