Terms 3-4 2017

EASTER SERVICE 2017

For this year's Easter Service, Kingfisher Class learnt about some of the symbols of Easter and what they mean. We enjoyed finding out more about the origins of some of the things we associate with Easter.

BRITISH SCIENCE WEEK 2017

For this year's Science Week, our whole school focus was healthy eating. We carried out an investigation to find out whether exercise could improve our memories. We started by carrying out a memory test to see how many objects we could remember after looking at them for one minute. Then we split into three groups: one did exercise for ten minutes, one played board games for ten minutes and one was our control group so they rested for ten minutes. After the ten minutes, we did another memory test with new objects. Our results were very mixed but mostly we found that resting for the ten minutes improved our memory. This has taught us that we all learn differently and, whilst exercise can help some of us improve our memory, some of us need to give our brains plenty of rest to help them remember information.

WORLD BOOK DAY 2017

Thursday 2nd March was World Book Day and Kingfisher Class had lots of fun dressing up as some of their favourite book characters. The whole school took part in a mannequin challenge, where we had to stay frozen reading our books whilst a camera filmed us. It was tricky staying still for so long but we loved watching the final result.

SAFER INTERNET DAY AND ANTI-BULLYING 2017

Tuesday 7th February was Safer Internet Day. In Kingfisher Class we learnt about our digital footprints; how everything we do online is recorded and leaves a trace. We spoke about Cyber-bullying and learnt a good way to remember some of the questions we should ask ourselves before we post anything online:

LIFE EDUCATION BUS

On Monday 6th February Kingfisher Class enjoyed going on the Life Education Bus. We spoke about how we are all unique and that it's okay to like the same things as our friends but it's also okay to be different. We also learnt about what our bodies need to stay healthy and the effect that things like cigarettes and alcohol can have on people's minds and bodies.

PIZZA DESIGN COMPETITION FOR BARDOLINOS AT CADBURY HOUSE!

Years 4-6 have been invited to take part in a pizza design competition for Bardolinos at Cadbury House. They were given a list of ingredients to choose from and had to design a tasty and eye-catching pizza. Two winners will be selected by Mrs Nickells to go and compete with children from other schools in the area to cook their pizzas at Bardolinos with professional chefs. One overall winner will then be chosen and will have their pizza added to the menu!

To help us design our pizzas we were given the opportunity to taste some of the different ingredients. The chilli sauce was surprisingly popular! We can't wait to see if one of our entries will be chosen as the overall winner.

Space Day ~ Friday 27th January 2017

NSPCC VIST ~ SPEAK OUT, STAY SAFE!

On Friday 20th January we had a visit from the NSPCC. They spoke to us about our rights and what we should do if we feel unsafe. We spoke about trusted adults and who we could talk to, including learning a fun way to remember the Childline telephone number by making the numbers with our fingers.

STRANGER DANGER!

This week in Kingfisher Class we have been talking about Stranger Danger. We shared ideas about what the word 'stranger' means and came up with some top tips to keep ourselves safe!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Whole School Focus

This term we are continuing to develop our whole school "Crew" and are working really hard at supporting and encouraging each other.

We are also continuing to work towards our whole school reading challenge and have a few children who are well on their way to completing the whole challenge with over 150 reads!

Our Class

This term our whole school theme is 'Where in the World?'. As part of this we will be learning all about Space and doing lots of fun activities to find out about the different planets and the moon.

In English our class text for this term is 'George's Secret Key to the Universe' by Lucy and Stephen Hawking. We look forward to finding out all about George and is amazing adventures in space. We will also be doing some non-fiction writing about Space based on what we have read and coming up with our one guides to the universe.
