Term 6

This term our learning theme is "Where shall we go today?". During our learning theme we will be finding out about some of the natural wonders of our world and where they are located and how we can look after our natural world. We will be exploring floating and sinking and the properties of different materials. We will also be looking at some similarities and differences between things in the past and now with a focus on pirates and the seaside.

Here are some of the stories that we will be using to support our learning during this theme.

Week 1 update

It has been lovely to welcome the children back to school after their half term break. We have had a lovely start to the term with the children sharing their ideas about our new learning theme 'Where shall we go today?". We have enjoyed sharing our class text this week 'The lighthouse Keepers Lunch' and using our key vocabulary, especially the words ingenious and industrious by using and demonstrating them in our learning and play. This week we were scientists and were investigating the best material to stop the seagulls getting into Mr Grinlings lunch. We had 3 materials to test
Tissue paper, Tin foil and a Plastic bag. We made our predictions about which could be the best at stopping the seagulls before testing our predictions. We tested our predictions by dropping a pebble from the same height. At first they all protected Mr Grinlings lunch so we dropped it from a higher height. We found that the Plastic bag and the tissue paper were better than the foil.

Week 2 Update

Robin Class enjoyed being historians and artists this week linked to our story 'The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch'. We learnt about why lighthouses were important and how they have changed over time, and created some fantastic lighthouse pictures using different media. This week the Robins were scientists and they used the science lab for the first time. This afternoon the Robins were exploring the different electrical components, to make the light bulb light up, just like Mr Gringlings lighthouse. The children were able to identify the wires, light bulb and the battery and investigated how to connect them together to create a circuit. The children were very successful and we even explored what would happen if we added a switch. We have also just started our Phase 4 phonics where we will have a new set of sight words and reading words with adjacent consonants patterns. Learning these patterns can support both reading and
spelling. Words containing adjacent consonants have two consonant sounds before and/or after a vowel sound. They are known by these spelling/sound patterns:
CCVC words e.g. trap, drip, slip.
CVCC words e.g. milk, pink, sand.
CCVCC words e.g. black, grasp, stamp.
