    Reading

It is really important that you try to read with your child at home as much as possible. Please try and hear your child read every day and record it in their reading record when you have read with them. We read with the children daily and all reading books will be changed every Thursday morning.

For our whole-school reading challenge, we count all the reads that your child completes with an adult both in school and at home. Reads are counted at the end of each week and children can gain different certificates for the number of reads they achieve throughout the school year. Regular reading not only helps to develop fluency and comprehension but also encourages a love of books and learning.

    Phonics

Phonics is an important part of learning to read and write. At our school, children are taught phonics daily to help them recognise letters and sounds and blend them together to read words confidently. In Year 1, children will take part in the Phonics Screening Check, a short assessment that helps teachers understand how well they are developing their phonics knowledge and reading skills. One of the best ways to support your child is by reading regularly at home and practising the sounds and words they are learning in school. Just a few minutes of reading each day can make a big difference to your child's confidence and progress.

    Spellings and Times Tables

Spellings will be given out at the beginning of each term and labelled with the date. The children will practise these in school, but they will also need to be practised at home. The spellings will be marked with the children so they are aware of their scores and progress.

Times tables can be practised using TT Rock Stars. If your child would prefer paper times table grids or worksheets to work from, please just ask. Login details can be found in the front of their reading records. Just 10 minutes of practise each day really helps to embed this knowledge and build confidence.

Children in year 1 will have a numbots log in where they can practice addition, subtraction and number bonds. Login details can be found in the front of their reading records.
