We promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. These are fostered and nurtured as part of our rich curriculum, our spiritual, moral, social and cultural provision as well as through the Christian ethos of the school and our vision and values. This provides a firm foundation to enable all to thrive as unique individuals and to prepare them to be successful global citizens.
DEMOCRACY
We promote a culture of encouraging Pupil Voice where children are listened to and have opportunities to air their opinions and ideas which contributes to decision making processes within school. Through the curriculum, children learn about government and the concept of democracy. For example-
RULE OF LAW
The importance of laws and rules are consistently reinforced as part of school life. This can be rules that govern the country, our school or in class. Pupils are taught the value and reasons behind laws in that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken. For example-
INDIVIDUAL LIBERTY
Within school, pupils are actively encouraged to make informed choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. The school celebrates each child's individual strengths and passions and they are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms in a responsible manner. For example -
TOLERANCE AND MUTUAL RESPECT OF THOSE WITH DIFFERENT FAITHS AND BELIEFS
Mutual respect is at the heart of our values and children learn that their behaviours have an effect on their own rights and those of others. Children learn about different faiths and beliefs to deepen their understanding of their place in a culturally diverse society. For example -
British Values are also promoted through our weekly Jigsaw PSHE lessons.
The use of the Jigsaw Learning Charter and tailored Class Charters particularly demonstrate this as they are child-centred and encourage pupils to work collaboratively, respect one another’s views, and follow an agreed set of ground rules that create a safe, positive, and inclusive learning environment.
The principles within the Jigsaw Learning Charter are developed during the first Jigsaw unit of the year, Being Me in My World. As a result, these values are embedded across the school community and support children as they grow, learn, and develop as responsible citizens.
By encouraging mutual respect, individual liberty, democracy, and tolerance of different beliefs and backgrounds, the Learning Charter helps pupils understand and practise the British Values in a meaningful and consistent way. It provides the foundation for learning in every Jigsaw lesson and supports positive relationships and behaviour throughout the school.
